Research Grant Council’s Visit to CUHK

To showcase the research strategies and achievements of The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to members of the Research Grant Council (RGC), CUHK received the RGC Visiting Party on 14 June 2018 (Thursday). In line with the Strategic Plan 2016-2020 of the University, the Visit was organized under four interdisciplinary Strategic Research Areas, which includes Environment and Sustainability. The Institute of Environment, Energy and Sustainability (IEES) was honored to co-host the Parallel Visits of Sub-group 7 – Environment and Sustainability (Parallel Visit) to introduce project highlights and important research output/results.

The Strategic Area of Research on Environment and Sustainability is coordinated by Prof. Chiu Chi-yue, Dean of Social Science. Co-hosting the Parallel Visit were the following parties under the Strategic Research Area:

  • Institute of Future Cities (IOFC) (on Smart and Sustainable Cities)
  • IEES (on Climate Change)
  • School of Life Sciences (SLS) and State Key Laboratory of Agrobiotechnology (SKLA) (on Climate-Smart and Sustainable Agriculture)
  • IEES – Energy Technology and Conservation Programme (on Renewable Energy and Natural Resources)

The Parallel Visit started with a tour to the Jockey Club Museum of Climate Change on Research and Innovation at CUHK led by Prof. Gabriel Lau, Co-Director of IEES. Presentations were delivered on various topics on Environment and Sustainability, by Prof. Leung Kwong-sak, Associate Director of IOFC and Professor of Computer Science and Engineering of Department of Computer Science and Engineering; Prof. Lau Ka-lun, Research Assistant Professor of IOFC, IEES and CUHK Jockey Club Institute of Ageing; Prof. Amos Tai, Assistant Professor of Earth System Science Programme of Faculty of Science; Prof. Lam Hon-ming, Professor of SLS and Director of SKLA; and Prof. Jimmy Yu, Associate Director (Research) of IEES and Choh-Ming Li Professor of Chemistry of Department of Chemistry.


At the end of the Parallel Visit, the RGC members viewed the posters and exhibits showing the latest developments and accomplishments of different projects, and exchanged views with faculty members and students who worked on the posters and exhibits.

The RGC Visit is held each year to one UGC-funded university and the Visiting Party comprises RGC members and members of the assessment committees/Panels under the Council. The last RGC Visit to CUHK was in 2010.
